Can renters install solar panels for solar energy? It depends, according to solarpowerpanels.ws. In some cases, renters can.

In some newer rental buildings, solar roof shingles have already been installed because property owners are always trying to increase their investments’ value.  Installing solar panels can increase the value by 10 percent. Plus, it drops electric bills. So if you can find an apartment that already has them, you save yourself a lot of trouble.

But if you can’t find an apartment that already has solar panels installed or if you are already renting one that doesn’t, look into your lease for more information. Many prohibit exterior installations. Some don’t. Discuss it with your landlord before you install them because they can cost up to $1,000. You probably won’t save that much on electric bills, but at least you will be greener.

Perhaps with some negotiation, your landlord will agree that solar panels are allowable.  He or she may even decide to amend the lease agreement to specifically exempt them from other prohibitions. Your landlord may even be able to get some positive exposure in the news media for being progressive with respect to renewable energy options. Point this out to them!
