Here are some tips for finding your next great apartment. These tips are from labolish.com.
1. Check more than one apartment hunting source. Some examples are the newspaper and Craiglist, but don’t forget to call up some property managers and just tell them what you’re looking for. They might have just the place. Often, these apartments are not advertised.
2. Talk with a current resident in the building. Either ask the property manager or landlord if you can talk to someone, or just find someone yourself. There’s no better way to get a feel for what the neighbors and maintenance team are like. The person you talk with can also tell you about the building itself and any issues he or she has had with anything.
3. Ask if subleasing is allowed. You never know what might happen and you just have to move somewhere else for whatever reason. If you are allowed to lease the apartment out to someone else, it could save you a lot of money.
4. Find out if any new construction will be going on in the area. You don’t want your gorgeous view to turn into a Wal-Mart parking lot.
5. Ask when the last renovation was. You don’t want to end up renting during it. You’re safe if you’re planning on renting a newer apartment.
6. Know how safe the area is before you sign your lease. You don’t want to hide out in your apartment after dark. You don’t want to worry about parking your car in the lot or the street. Get a general idea of the area’s safety before it’s too late.
7. Find out if any incentives are offered. Remember, the apartment industry is a business. Landlords have to be competitive with other apartment companies. Take advantage of that as a renter and find out what deals are being offered. Sometimes you can get a month or two free, no pet deposit, etc.
